INFORMATION

❝Such is the nature of evil. Out there in the vast ignorance of the world it festers and spreads. A shadow that grows in the dark. A sleepless malice as black as the oncoming wall of night.❞

HISTORY
Est. 450, First Age - Thranduil is born, the son of Oropher and an unnamed Sindarin elf. They live in Doriath, a forest roughly in the middle of the Beleriand region.

506, First Age - The Second Kinslaying occurs, targeting the city of Menegroth within Doriath. Oropher flees with his family to Eastern Beleriand.

587, First Age - Beleriand is mostly submerged into the sea during the War of Wrath, save for the Lindon region where Oropher and his family live.

1, Second Age - The Grey Havens are built in Lindon, established to give elves a place where they can set sail to Valinor.

???, Second Age - After declining to sail to Valinor, Oropher leaves Lindon, his family a part of a group of other like-minded Sindar who travel eastward in search of the Silvan elves.

750, Second Age - Oropher founds the Woodland Realm within the Greenwood. His family and the other Sindar elves who made the journey with them choose to adopt the customs of the Silvan elves who make up the bulk of the new realm.

???, Second Age - The capital of the Woodland Realm is moved further north two different times, thanks to Oropher's desire to keep his realm secluded.

3434, Second Age - Oropher dies in the Battle of Dagorlad during the War of the Last Alliance. Thranduil takes command of the remaining third of the Silvan army.

3441, Second Age - Thranduil returns to Greenwood with the survivors of the war, and is crowned king of the Woodland Realm.

???, Third Age - Thranduil's mother chooses to make the journey to Valinor.

???, Third Age - Thranduil marries a silvan elf, and Legolas is born shortly after.

1050, Third Age - The Necromancer takes over the abandoned stronghold at Amon Lanc. The Men living nearby the forest start calling it Mirkwood in response to the growing evil there. Thranduil moves the Woodland Realm further north again.

???, Third Age - Thranduil's wife is captured by orcs and taken north to Angmar; it is implied that she was either defending Legolas or the realm at large at the time. Thranduil personally leads an army to rescue her, but they arrive too late to save her and are set upon by a dragon. Thranduil is badly injured by dragon-fire and his forces retreat.

???, Third Age - Thranduil brings King Thrór of Erebor the White Gems of Lasgalen, to be made into a necklace. When Thranduil returns for the finished product, Thrór demands a higher price then was agreed upon. Thranduil refuses and leaves without the gems.

2770, Third Age - Smaug destroys both Dale and Erebor. Thranduil refuses to give aid to the survivors, fearing that Smaug would turn his wrath upon the elves in the process.

2941, Third Age - The events of the Hobbit take place.
PERSONALITY
  • Aloof and haughty, often to the point of insulting bluntness. He has a regal attitude and is not at all reluctant to say what he thinks. Thranduil acts and speaks as someone who expects his orders to be followed and his word to be taken seriously, though he'll still give equal consideration to anyone that doesn't act completely foolish. You'll never catch Thranduil cracking a joke, but thinly-veiled sarcasm or snide comments aren't off the table.
  • Quick to anger, particularly after personal slights. His conflict with Thorin is deeply personal for the both of them, but Thranduil does still try to bargain with him before insults are thrown in his face... yet from there, his cold attitude towards the dwarves doesn't easily thaw. He's equally quick to snap back at Tauriel after she accuses him of not feeling love.
  • Greedier than most elves; has a definite love of gems and other finery. As mentioned in the books, his kingdom is not as rich as others and that makes him more eager to add to his hoard. The elves of Mirkwood still throw parties as often as other elves do, and Thranduil is known to be fond of wine. Just because he's generally a very composed person doesn't mean he can't enjoy himself from time to time.
  • Used to being an isolationist; he prioritizes the safety of his realm above all other concerns. Though Thranduil is certainly still an enemy of evil, he knows all too well the value of lives and has become almost aggressively defensive between his personal tragedies and the evil growing in southern Mirkwood. Though not afraid to fight when he must, this attitude can be detrimental, as seen in his refusal to aid the Lonely Mountain dwarves over the fear that his own forces might be killed by Smaug in the process.
  • Not without sympathy, though he doesn't show it well and may even disguise it. He didn't need to give aid to the Lake Town refugees while bringing his army to the Lonely Mountain, but he cared enough to help his former trading partners even when he didn't expect them to be an ally in the conflict. Despite his cold exterior, Thranduil does still care about others, though his reluctance to open up even to his own son is proof enough of the thick shell he protects himself with.
ABILITIES/SKILLS
ELVEN PHYSIOLOGY - Elves are very long-lived; they do not physically age past their prime and are immune to non-magical diseases. However, they can still be cut down by injury, and the depths of their emotion make it possible for an elf to pass away from grief or simply the weariness of a long life. Their hearing and eyesight is more enhanced then that of Men, and they're generally far more graceful and quick. Elves do not sleep, but instead enter a shorter state of meditative rest that serves a similar purpose.

PERSONAL ILLUSIONS - Elves have strong souls, to the point that they can influence the body, particularly in times of stress. (This is in fact the reason that they must eventually cross the sea to Valinor, or else their spirit causes their bodies to fade away and basically kills them). In Thranduil's case, it manifested by showing a past injury that was long since healed. This use of elven magic can arguably also be seen in scenes where elves seem to be glowing, simply due to the strength of their spirit. Technically an illusion, it is very limited in scope and only affects Thranduil; mostly creating parlor tricks like a glow or a shadow when not showing old wounds. It cannot be used to change his appearance or to mimic another person.

LONG-LIVED - Given that he's seen thousands of years in his lifetime, Thranduil has skills above and beyond that of most humans. He has past military experience and leads his people into battle as their general. He's shown to be an accomplished fighter with either one sword or two, taking advantage of his natural agility and speed in an efficient and deadly fighting style. He's also a skilled rider and speaks multiple Middle-Earth languages, including Khuzdul and Orkish alongside Sindarin and Common.
